Home Town of Fighter Pilot Arthur Roy Brown

Arthur Roy Brown was a Canadian fighter pilot credited with killing Germany’s top First World War ace, Manfred von Richthofen.

He obtained his private pilot’s license at the Wright School of Aeronautics in Ohio in 1915 and subsequently sailed to Britain to join the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS). In November 1917, Brown received the Distinguished Service Cross (DSC) award for his aerial victories, and in April 2018, he obtained the rank of Captain. On April 21, 2018, engaged in a fight with a German Squadron, Brown saw Manfred von Richthofen heading to attack his friend and fellow pilot Wilfrid May. Brown followed and shot at the German ace, who eventually crashed into a field.

He founded General Airways Limited in 1928, and in 1934 it became his full-time job. In 1943, he bought a farm in Stouffville, where he was to live for the short remainder of his life. On 9 March 1944, Brown died of a heart attack in his Stouffville home.

Willow Springs Winery

Wine lovers will be happy to hear that there isn’t one but two key wineries in Stouffville. The Willow Springs Winery was opened in the 1950s by the Testa family from Italy. The family migrated to North America in the 16th century and brought Zinfandel grapes, a type of cool-climate grapes that the family still uses for their wines today.

The Winery prides its wine-making process: using hand-harvested grapes, the vineyard crushes and ferments them in small batches to create the wine, which is then aged in oak barrels. And they have reason to be proud of the process, too: their wines have won awards in numerous competitions, including the New York Finger Lakes International Wine Competition and the All-Canadian Wine Competition. To taste award-winning wine, visit Willow Springs Winery on your trip through Stouffville!

Bonus: The winery doubles as a wedding venue and event space and offers all-inclusive wedding packages and villas for rent if you want to stay on the property!

Whitchurch-Stouffville Museum & Community Centre

The Whitchurch-Stouffville Museum & Community Centre comprises several buildings restored to their respective time frames, modern rental spaces, children’s camps and workshops, exhibitions, and educational programs!

Their heritage buildings were all built in the 19th century and included the Bogarttown School (built-in 1857), the Vandorf Public School (built-in 1871), the log cabin, the Victorian farmhouse (built in the 1850s), and a barn. The log cabin was moved to the museum site in 1982 and was restored and furnished to replicate a pioneer’s house in the 1870s. The Victorian farmhouse, built by James Brown, remained the Brown family residence until the 1950s and has now been restored to represent an 1880s farmhouse.

Other centre features include a Research Room, an Exhibition Gallery, and a Discovery room specifically catered toward children. The centre also offers camps and workshops for young children. Visit the past and present of Stouffville all in one at the Whitchurch-Stouffville Museum & Community Centre.
