McMichael Canadian Art Collection — Kleinburg
★ 5.0
·
10365 Islington Ave, Kleinburg, ON
The anchor of the trip. The McMichael holds one of the largest public collections of Tom Thomson's work — dozens of the small oil-on-panel sketches he painted outdoors in Algonquin, plus canvases he later finished in Toronto. Behind the gallery stands Thomson's Shack: the actual construction shed he lived and painted in during Toronto winters, moved intact from behind the Studio Building in 1962 — walls, woodstove, single window and all. Allow three hours minimum. This is where the trip becomes real.
