Saskatchewan’s first full-sized tourist railway — and the pride of Ogema. The Southern Prairie Railway offers heritage train tours along 70 miles of private track, travelling east to Pangman and west to Horizon through wide-open prairie landscape.

The train is the real thing: a 1945 General Electric 44-ton diesel switcher locomotive, purchased from the Conway Scenic Railroad in New Hampshire and trucked across the continent. The passenger car is a beautifully restored 1922 Pullman coach, brought in from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Volunteers from the Ogema Heritage Railway Association spent years restoring both before the railway opened in 2012.

Today, the Southern Prairie Railway runs 13 different themed tours. The Heritage Train visits a 1922 grain elevator in Horizon. The Train Robbery Ride features “outlaws” who hold up the carriage. The Rum Runner takes you back to Prohibition, complete with costumes and Solo Italia food. There’s a Kids’ Fun Train, a Craft Beer Train, an Enchanted 9¾ Harry Potter trip, wine-tasting excursions, murder mystery tours, fowl suppers, and more.

In 2025, over 4,300 visitors rode the train. Each round trip runs roughly 2.5 to 3.5 hours, and access to the Deep South Pioneer Museum is included with every train package.
