The first thing you see driving into Castor on Highway 12 is the grain elevator — and that’s exactly as it should be. The Alberta-Pacific elevator became a Provincial Historic Resource in 2004, one of only about eleven in the province under preservation society protection.
The museum itself is housed in the former CPR railway station and features an eclectic collection of artifacts showing what early stores, businesses, and homes were like on the prairies. There’s a dentist’s surgery, a hospital room exhibit, early clothing made of cow and buffalo hide, local history books, maps, and photographs from the beginnings of Castor as a railway and agricultural centre.
Restored rail cars sit on the track beside the elevator. Many visitors come here to rediscover their family’s roots in this region. Open Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday in season.
